Establish the microbiology of the infection. If occurring within 6 months of surgery, the organism is commonly Staphylococcus aureus. If the infection is late onset, it is usually coagulase-negative Staphylococci or Gram-negative bacilli.
Discuss all cases with Consultant Microbiologist as a variety of antibiotic combinations may be appropriate.
