Otitis externa without cellulitis

Therapy

Gentisone HC ear drops - 2 drops 6 hourly 

Notes:

Treatment duration: 7-14 days

Otitis externa with mild localised cellulitis

Therapy

Flucloxacillin 500mg PO 6 hourly 

 

Penicillin allergy:

Doxycycline 100mg PO 12 hourly

Notes:

Treatment duration: 7 days

Otitis externa with severe or rapidly spreading cellulitis

Therapy

Piperacillin-Tazobactam 4.5g IV 6 hourly 

 

Penicillin allergy:

Meropenem 1g IV 8 hourly

Notes:

Treatment duration: Discuss with ENT and Microbiology consultant
