Otitis media with persistent or systemic (e.g. fever) symptoms

Therapy

Amoxicillin 500mg PO 8 hourly 

or

Doxycycline 100mg PO 12 hourly

Notes:

Treatment duration: 5 days

Otitis media with severe systemic infection/sepsis or evidence of CNS involvement

Therapy

Ceftriaxone 2g IV 12 hourly

Notes:

Treatment duration: Discuss with ENT and Microbiology consultant

Notes

Most uncomplicated cases are viral and do not usually require antibiotic treatment or acute admission.
