Staph.aureus

First Line

Therapy

<3months: Cefotaxime IV (at CNS dose) + metronidazole IV/PO

>3months: Ceftriaxone IV (at CNS dose) + metronidazole IV/PO

 

Notes:

If no organism identified IVOST to PO co-amoxiclav and metronidazole to complete 7-10 day course.

Anaphylaxis (including severe skin reactions) to penicillin / cephalosporins - (Penicillin allergy)

Therapy

Vancomycin IV + Gentamicin IV + Metronidazole IV/PO

May need surgical drainage; discuss with ENT. If cold abscess, then discuss with tertiary centre.

Review treatment following culture result and discuss with microbiology.
