Antimicrobial prescribing: NHS Forth Valley
Ulcers always colonised. Antibiotics do not improve healing unless active infection. (purulent exudate / odour, increased pain, cellulitis, pyrexia)
If active infection, send pre-treatment swabs.
Review antibiotics after culture results.
Drug details
Active infection if cellulitis/increased pain/pyrexia/purulent exudate/odour.
If active infection:
flucloxacillin
500mg QDS
For 7 days. If slow response continue for a further 7 days
orclarithromycin
500mg BD
For 7 days. If slow response continue for a further 7 days
