Infective gastroenteritis

Important: Notes

• Take infection prevention and control precautions.
• Frequently self limiting and may not be bacterial.
• Antibacterials are not usually indicated.
• If bloody diarrhoea, severe systemic upset, immunocompromised patient or returning traveller discuss with medical microbiology or infectious disease specialist.
• Send faecal samples, and blood for culture if pyrexial.
• Consider immune deficiency and testing for HIV.
