For use in meningococcal sepsis or meningitis

Likely organisms: Neisseria meningitidis

Antimicrobial recommendation

For all contacts, including pregnant and breastfeeding women.

Ciprofloxacin 500mg orally as a single dose

Also recommended for index case if NOT treated with Ceftriaxone

Notes

If meningococcal disease suspected the team caring for the patient must contact the Health Protection Team (HPT) or on call deputy when clinical diagnosis is made. HPT will deal with prophylaxis for contacts.
