Antibiotics are not routinely recommended for acute pancreatitis.
Specific situations where antibiotics may be required:
- Intercurrent biliary tract infection
- Pancreatitis with infected necrosis
- Complications of severe infection such as hospital acquired, or ventilator associated pneumonia
Discuss with the hepatobiliary team and microbiology before starting antibiotics.
