Antimicrobial prescribing: NHS Lothian
Patients with variceal upper gastrointestinal haemorrhage are at risk of Gram negative sepsis.
Recommended duration: 3 days
Antimicrobial recommendation
Co-amoxiclav 1.2g every 8 hours IV
Penicillin allergy
Co-trimoxazole 960mg every 12 hours IV
Once oral route is available IV to oral switch using the same agent
