Insulin pumps, continuous glucose monitors and Radiology
CT and MRI scanners can interfere with the pump operation, therefore insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitors should be removed prior to imaging.
If the procedure is planned to take more than one hour then advise the patient to give themselves a bolus before removing the insulin pump to reduce the risk associated with insulin omission- if the patient is not confident to administer this themselves, please contact the diabetes team (if in hours), on in an emergency start a VRII then take the pump off
Unless in emergency, please ensure the patient has supplies to restart their device after the scan. If it is an emergency and the patient does not have supplies, then please start a VRII until supplies can be sourced.
Please do not throw equipment away and keep the pump in a safe place if removing – they cost around £3000 to replace.
