Postnatal Oral Analgesia Discharge Prescription (447)

SVD

  • Paracetamol 500mg - 1g oral four times daily with
  • *Ibuprofen 400mg oral three times daily.

Instrumental deliveries

  • Paracetamol 500mg - 1g oral four times daily with
  • *Diclofenac 50mg oral three times daily.

LUSCS or Third/Fourth degree tear

  • Paracetamol 500mg - 1g oral four times daily with
  • *Diclofenac 50mg oral or three times daily with
  • Dihydrocodeine 30mg oral every 4 to 6 hours (max four times daily) for women being discharged on day 1 or 2 if required for moderate pain, there is contraindication to NSAID or existing chronic pain issues.

If patient is ≤ 50kg reduce Paracetamol to 500mg every 4 to 6 hours (Maximum 4 doses per 24 hours) and consider reducing doses of NSAIDs.

*Regimes containing NSAIDs, i.e. Ibuprofen or Diclofenac should not be prescribed for patients who are asthmatic, have G.I. problems or are hypersensitive to NSAIDs.
