Warning
Stop and think before giving antibiotics. Prescribe an antibiotic only when there is likely to be a clear clinical benefit
Document indication and intended duration/review date
Review previous microbiology results: if resistant target organisms isolated (e.g. MRSA, ESBL, known resistance to empirical antibiotic choices) discuss with microbiologist
Consider delayed antibiotic prescriptions
Do not prescribe antibiotics for mild and self-limiting conditions
Avoid broad spectrum agents where a narrow spectrum agent will be effective
