Acute management:

50-80% of infective sore throats are due to virus infections. Routine throat swabs should not be carried out.
Encourage oral fluid intake and use of antipyretics / analgesia.
If antibiotics are clinically indicated, see BNFC for dosing
First line - Penicillin V for 10 days.
Penicillin allergy - Clarithromycin for 10 days

Antibiotics should not be used to secure symptomatic relief in sore throat. Antibiotics for streptococcus sore throat only decrease duration by less than 1 day.
