As part of universal neonatal screening, local policy is in place for neonates who:
- Pass
- Are referred for further assessment
- Do Not Attend
- Require follow-up as they are at risk of progressive hearing loss
Hearing problems: children (Guidelines)
Warning
- Child can swim but no deep diving
- No difference in infection rates between swimmers and non swimmers
- Persistant perforation occurs in 1% to 5% of cases and further surgery may be required at a later stage
- Grommets should fall out in 6 to 9 months - hole should heal concurrently
- Grommets associated with aural discharge - Prescription should be topical antibiotic drops, not oral
